See LangScape's Semi-diplomatic and Edited displays which give an idea of the poor quality of the scribal copying of this text; emendations and interpretations are tentative Back to text
2
Or this may read 'þes' Back to text
3
This is very corrupt. From a graphical point of view, this last word looks like a miswriting of 'gerihtre' (straight), but we'd expect a noun here, and note the repetition of the mangling at the end of the clause where the word again appears to be a noun. The 'ƿwes/þes de' before this is anyone's guess. Too many magic mushrooms in the monastic diet perhaps Back to text
4
OE 'dic' can mean both 'ditch' and 'dyke' Back to text
5
This may be a sream name of the same derivation as the river Isle in Somerset, but this text is so corrupt that it may simply be a miscopying Back to text
6
'on' (to) omitted Back to text
